Sunday April 11, 2010 HENDRICKSON FLIES TO A WIN AT BRIDGEPORT SPEEDWAY BRIDGEPORT, NJ (April 11, 2010) - Before a large crowd, Wade Hendrickson won the second leg of the Tri-Track Big Block Modified Series. In the URC Sprint season opener, Trevor Lewis was the victor. Larry Lippincott took the checkered flag in the Crate Modified event.
After a yellow flag on the original start of the 30-lap Tri-Track Big Block Modified Series feature, Scott Irwin led the opening lap but quickly Wade Hendrickson assumed the top spot on lap 2 from his fourth place start. On the next circuit, Irwin lost two more positions as Matt Harrell and Chad James both got by him to take second and third place respectively. Also on lap 3, Mike Barone drew a caution for flat right tire. On the restart, Hendrickson chose the outside lane and held onto his lead. Behind him, positions were changing in the top five as Brian Kressley motored up to fourth with Rick Laubach driving into fifth from his twelfth starting spot. By lap 8, Hendrickson had a half straightway lead on the field. A spin by Brett Ballard on lap 11 evaporated Hendrickson’s comfortable lead. When action resumed, the top three kept their places but Kressley lost a few spots as Laubach took over fourth place and Billy Pauch, Sr. maneuvered into fifth. With Hendrickson still unchallenged, a battle ensued between James and Laubach for several laps before Laubach took over third on lap 17. Laubach began to close in on Harrell and eventually took over the runner-up position on lap 21. Two tours later, Hendrickson entered lap traffic and Laubach began to reel in the leader. After successfully driving past slower cars, Hendrickson crossed the finish line first for his forty-third career win at Bridgeport. Laubach came home in second with third place going to Harrell. Pauch, Sr. squeezed by James in the final laps to get fourth place. Qualifying events were won by Laubach, Hendrickson and Pauch, Sr.
In the 25-lap Rislone URC Sprint feature, pole sitter Davey Sammons bolted out to the lead with Chris Coyle and Curt Michael in tow. Michael worked his way by Coyle on lap 3 and Trevor Lewis put Coyle back another place on the next circuit. By lap 5, Sammons began to lap cars and 2009 URC Sprint Champion JJ Grasso climbed into fifth after starting in tenth place. On lap 8, the red lights illuminated the smooth racetrack as Coyle’s car collided with a slow moving Art Leidl and caused a spectacular flip by Coyle in turn two. When the green flag waved again, Sammons remained on the point. On lap 11, Michael and Lewis began a multi-lap tussle with Lewis finally gaining the position on lap 15 just before the yellow flag waved for the stopped sprinter of Nick Schlauch, Jr. Sammons fought back a fierce challenge by Lewis on the restart to preserve his lead. Behind the top two, Grasso crept by Michael to gain third place on lap 16. With five laps to go, the final caution of the event occurred for a slow moving Scott Pursell. On the restart, Lewis swung by Sammons in turn two to grab the lead. On the next lap, Sammons and Grasso came together briefly on the backstretch. The encounter sent Grasso scooting through the infield and the loss of one position after returning to the speedway between turns three and four. Lewis retained his lead in the final laps to gain his seventeenth career win in URC Sprint Car competition. Sammons crossed the finish line in second with Michael in third and Grasso fourth. Kevin Nouse came home in fifth place. Sammons, Coyle, and Lewis were victors in the heat races. Schlauch, Jr. won the consolation race.
Larry Lippincott took the lead on lap 13 and claimed the win in the 20-lap Crate Modified feature. Eric Kormann led the majority of laps before the eleventh place starting Lippincott took over the lead. At the finish line, Kormann was second followed by Neal Williams, Dan Mazy and John Micek. Mike Cogdill, Kormann, and Chuck Hopkins each picked up a heat race win. Following the race, Lippincott’s motor was found to have no track seals on it. After a technical inspection and proper sealing, Lippincott’s third career win at Bridgeport Speedway was upheld.
